Betty Vakali (b.1978) is a Greek architect, trained in Oxford School of architecture in UK. She is a self taught contemporary artist with a keen interest on various aspects of design models, forms and materials. Soon enough, she finds herself being fascinated by building materials found at the construction environment. The idea of bringing life into these materials through experimentation, challenges her as an artist. “As an architect, fascinated by industrial materials, found in the construction area, my passion is to explore how they translate artistically use on the human body.” She is drawn to experimentation and working in tactile mediums prone to adaptation and steeped in process. Cast cement is the fundamental material of her innovative creations. She is getting enthusiastic by making small scale models, using them as a mold for the casting procedure. Her collection refers to individually designed pieces of handmade jewelry, as expressive art. Each architectural model is a unique part of our body. It envelopes the human body and combines time, memories and identity. Each piece more than a simple jewel turning into contemporary statement jewelry is basically inspired by the Greek heritage and reflects cultural characteristics of traditional architecture in Greece.
